Shoal Creek at Central Library + Second Street Extension

City of Austin

As landscape architect consultant to the City of Austin Public Works Engineering Services Department, MWM DesignGroup successfully completed the preliminary design, construction documentation, and construction administration for this project. MWM provided planning and design services for improvements to an extension of Shoal Creek Park as a component of the planning for the New City Central Library project.

These improvements serve as a key component of the broader redevelopment of the Seaholm and Green Water Treatment Plant sites, a visionary project introducing pedestrian, bicycle, and open-space elements as integral components of a renewed downtown district. Work on this project exemplifies the benefits of successfully integrating streambank stabilization, urban park improvements, ecological function into a single plan of development fostering beneficial use of the Shoal Creek waterway, as well as MWM’s expertise in managing this integration.

The design of Shoal Creek Park provides the physical connection between several adjacent projects including the City Central Library, 2nd Street Bridge, 2nd Street Woonerf, Green Water Treatment Redevelopment and Seaholm Substation Art Wall projects. MWM continually met with designers, contractors, owners, city staff, stakeholders, and inspectors throughout the construction of the project to ensure project implementation was consistent with the vision established during design of the project. MWM provided thorough documentation of design decisions and helped provide viable, cost effective solutions including unforeseen conditions discovered during the construction phase.
