In 2015, Austin Community College received $4.9 million from the state of Texas to develop the region’s first wet lab at a community college, addressing a critical shortage of specialized biotechnology research space in Central Texas. This facility at ACC’s Highland Campus supports the growing biomedical industry by providing essential research infrastructure and workforce training opportunities.
MWM DesignGroup provided site civil design and permitting services, including remodeling the entryway, designing a generator pad, and connecting to existing utilities. Navigating complex permitting challenges, MWM guided the project through development regulations and secured a site plan exemption permit, a HazMat permit, and a building permit. The team collaborated closely with the City of Austin’s Development Assistance Center, Fire Department, and Commercial Plan Review to ensure timely approvals. This project strengthens the region’s capacity for biotech innovation and education, helping to cultivate the next generation of biomedical professionals.
