US 183 Bergstrom Expressway Survey and Utility Relocation

MWM DesignGroup provided civil engineering and surveying services for design of this 8 mile project under contracts with Colorado River Constructors (CRC) and Parsons Brinckerhoff.

Colorado River Constructors: The MWM design scope for CRC involved performing utility design for 8 separate construction packages and providing surveys needed for the relocation of utilities.

MWM was selected to be one of three consultants tasked with relocating utilities. Overall, over 93,000 linear feet of water and wastewater lines, separated into 20 permit packages, were relocated to accommodate the roadway construction. MWM was responsible for the design of over 38,000 linear feet of water and wastewater utility lines (over 40% of the project length) split between eight permit packages.

The MWM design team delivered two 60% submittal packages every week in January with the eighth, and final, 60% submittal package delivered on February 2nd. Despite the extremely expedited schedule, the design team met all project deadlines and has consistently exceeded the clients expectations related to quality. MWM also prepared submittals for all eight permit packages and provided construction administration services for the duration of the project.

The surveying scope included performing boundary surveys and preparation of metes and bounds/sketches for 99 easements, reviewing title commitments and preparation of 53 title letters and preparation an easement strip map. MWM also performed the topographic surveys needed for the design of the proposed utility lines within these easements.

Parsons Brinkerhoff: The survey scope with Parson Brinkerhoff involved performing miscellaneous surveys to supplement the existing aerial mapping for the project. This includes establishing the primary control throughout the project corridor; performing topographic surveys for approximately 30.5 acres of obscured areas; establishing control and coordination for obtaining additional aerial mapping; locating approximately 170 boreholes; obtaining detail data at two major bridges (Manor/Springdale and Colorado River); obtaining data at various culverts, inlets and detention ponds; obtaining vertical clearance at various bridges; obtaining cross section data at proposed pavement tie-in locations at intersecting streets and driveways. MWM DesignGroup was also responsible for coordinating the traffic control needed to perform these services and surveys. This required lane closures requiring some of this effort to be performed between 8:00 pm to 6:00 am.
